On February 21st, 1965. Malcolm X (Malcolm Little) was preparing a speech to address the African American Peoples Unity in New York, when someone in the 400th row shouted out "Nigger! get you're hands out of you're pockets!". While Malcolm's security guards were trying to quite the disturbance, three white males rushed onto the stage all with automatic hand guns and shot Malcolm multiple times.
Malcolm was rushed too Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 pm.
One Gunman, Talmadge Hayer (Thomas Hagen) was almost beaten to death by the crowd before police arrived. the other members were identified as Norman Butler & Thomas Johnson who were both members of the Nation of Islam. All three were convicted of murder in March 16, 1966 and were sentenced life to Prison. Butler, now known as Muhammad Abdul Aziz, was released and paroled in 1985 and has committed no crimes since. The other assailants were released in 2003 & 2004 but both passed away in 2010.
The Funeral was a Public viewing on February 23-26 at Unity Funeral Home in Harlem, NY. The funeral was attended by some 29,000 people, and among those were famous civil rights leaders such as John Lewis, Bayard Rustin, James Forman, James Farmer, Jesse Grey & Andrew Young. Along with Actor and Activist Ossie Davis.
